The first lung transplantation in Europe was performed on a coronavirus patient in Austria. The surgery was urgent and very complicated.

A 45-year-old resident of the state of Carinthia had a severe respiratory failure because of the COVID-19. The transplant surgery was performed by surgeons at Vienna General Hospital under the direction of Walter Klepetko, according to a press release on the website of the Vienna Medical University.

«We are very pleased with the patient’s condition, taken into account the extremely difficult initial circumstances. The patient is already on her way to recovery just a few days after the procedure», said the specialist.

The woman was completely healthy before getting an infection. She picked up the coronavirus about eight weeks ago. Artificial ventilation of the lungs became impossible because of the respiratory failure, and only a circulation pump was able to maintain the condition of the hospitalized patient. The woman was transported to the capital by Austrian army Black Hawk helicopter.

In China lung transplantation was performed on a 59-year-old patient with coronavirus about three months ago. Chen Jingyu, the country’s leading lung transplant specialist, led it. The surgery lasted five hours.
